The word Diaspora is an acknowledgement of the nature of our relationship. That though we are scattered across the globe, we share common blood and ancestry. The nurture part seems to always get in the way of our reconciliation efforts however: this is the unusual story about how Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther helped me bridge this gap.
Post call is a strange time. I’m excited about going home to bond with my pillow but I’m just lucid and loopy enough to have philosophical and emotional breakthroughs. “Somewhere between psychotic and iconic”. This is the sequel to Science and Faith.
This one hits close to home and is a long time coming. With every passing generation our cultures and home languag\nes become more and more at risk, threatened and endangered. I’m going to paint a word portrait of scenes from my life that both do and don’t yet exist. 2020 (and beyond) is going to be filled with wonders unknown and I couldn’t be more excited to leap.
I am my mother’s daughter and her mother’s blood runs in my veins. I am a product of unconventional traditionalists. If conditioning is preparation, Legacy is simply generational conditioning. True to tradition, I’ve been conditioned to be unconventional.
Learning is a tricky thing. What happens when you have to unlearn things you were certain were true? Things you didn’t even realise you believed? If it feels like you’re pulling at something deeply rooted, remember that it’s only weeds because now you’re learning.
I enjoyed history so much growing up. The stories of fearsome warriors, evil acts and human triumphs. I learned how separation, misinformation and propaganda (aka psychological warfare) were the tools of choice for evil regimes on the other side of the world. I never dreamed that these tools were still at work. Here and now.
I learned that meritocracy was rigged early on but it took me years to understand that it was only selectively so. “you have to jump twice as high…” is either told to you kindly as fair warning or thrust upon you suddenly while you’re trying to learn how to jump.
